Private Residence
This beautifully crafted 6,000SF vacation retreat's 18-acre site offers a commanding view of Lake Michigan from a bluff 200 feet above the water.
- The main house is oriented to take advantage of cross ventilation and parallels the bluffs offering dramatic views of the lake. Mackey Mitchell developed a master plan which called for a new pavilion for vehicles, and the renovation of two existing homes on the site. United by materials, details and roof pitches, the buildings all harmonize with the natural surroundings.
- The smaller residence was the first project undertaken for testing ideas about building form, materials and colors. Anchored to granite buttresses which form a low granite wall, the auto pavilion's green cedar wood-shake roof, copper cupola, and heavy timbered frame are in keeping with the overll character of surrounding structures.
