Kingston Hall provides 382 freshman STEM students with a living/learning community, meeting SNHU’s goals of building community among the students, connecting with the rest of campus, and being as ‘smart’ and energy-efficient as possible. As with Monadnock Hall, the first Mackey Mitchell-designed hall on campus, the focus of Kingston’s design is a ‘knuckle,’ a vertical hub of social and study spaces linking all levels at the center of the building. The knuckle is transparent with floor-to-ceiling glass to take advantage of the stunning views.
Shape
Kingston Hall features 16- and 20-bed pods that include shared bathrooms and student lounges. Additional features include a 30-person classroom, a public kitchen with a seating height island for use as a work surface or 8-top dining table, a large multipurpose lounge with a fireplace and flexible seating options, an outside patio for events and gathering, and a game room on the main floor to promote social interaction among the residents.
Inspire
Situated close to the campus core as the first new building in what will be a revitalized residential district, Kingston Hall forms a prominent campus ‘place’ and gateway to the district and reinforces an important pedestrian artery. The site’s prominence combined with the building's physical height and location atop a highpoint creates a highly visible iconic campus building. Exterior materials were chosen specifically to reflect the native landscape.
From programming through construction, MMA provided close attention to detail, stayed highly engaged and responsive with multiple stakeholders, and successfully delivered a residence hall that is helping transform the student life experience at SNHU.
