Azalea Hall is a new 412-bed residential community on the Mississippi State University campus. Significant auxiliary program spaces include a dining hall, community recreation lounge and open kitchen, and a large multi-purpose space designed as a storm shelter. In addition, a glassy community lounge “bridge” links two sections of the building. This bridge provides views of students flowing through the site and elegantly frames the view to the Chapel of Memories monument.
Shape
Our innovative pod-style design, featuring single-bed units and centrally located restrooms, addresses privacy needs while fostering community interaction. Eliminating long, dark corridors, we've created an open, light-filled environment through a unique floor plan that bends and turns on site. Uniquely shaped pod lounges with kitchenettes maximize daylight and visual connections, offering students an elevated living experience. The distinctive plan shape extends its impact outdoors, creating various-sized spaces to meet diverse program needs.
Inspire
MSU recently developed a set of design principles called “The Architecture of Mississippi State University” to help guide a timeless, cohesive exterior look for campus buildings as the university continues to grow. This set of principles, more affectionately coined “Bulldog Architecture” (named after the University’s mascot), takes inspiration from the architectural roots of loved buildings on campus that fall within the “vernacular-classical spectrum” - all with an appreciation of southern classical architectural traditions. The design team worked side-by-side with the university to be sure this building reflected the goals developed in these guidelines and will be an inspiration for future buildings on campus.
It’s been incredible to watch the team work together to provide all the desired amenities while still respecting architectural details, outdoor environments, and the overall campus master plan.
