Gene Mackey, FAIA, will be leading a tour of Washington University’s South 40. With its many student-focused amenities, it has become the epicenter of student life. It is home to 3,300 current students and has become the primary dining facility on campus. The history of South 40’s development and master planning will be discussed as the tour compares newly constructed housing with some of the original campus structures.
Mackey Mitchell began work on the project in the mid-90’s. Transformation of the university’s South 40 (formerly Wohl Center) was accomplished over many years and has proved to be a significant and successful contribution to Washington University’s student-life experience. The tour is part of SCUP’s (Society for College & Urban Planning) 2013 North Central Regional Conference.
