A prominent new icon on the University of Alabama Huntsville campus has received the top Merit Award in the institutional architectural design category in this year’s AIA (American Institute of Architects) Birmingham, AL Chapter Design Awards program. Four Chicago architects served as jurors. The award was presented at last night’s ceremony held at the Alabama Theater in Birmingham.
UAH’s Charger Union is an integral part of celebrating student life on campus. The dramatic new building is the result of a strong demand from the student population to have a “place to call home” – one that is welcoming, vibrant, and full of light. Gwynn Zivic, with Mackey Mitchell Architects, was the lead designer, working with project team members John Burse, Merrilee Hertlein, Jim Konrad, Clint Smith, and Stacey Wehe. Turner Batson served as the local Architect-of-Record.
