A $49 million renovation project at Western Kentucky University is under construction. In the fall of 2014, students will be able to enjoy an updated, innovative, sustainable space that will serve as a new social hub for university students. The new Dero Downing Student Union is designed to become LEED certified and will feature a magnificent Beaux Arts skylight on the upper floor. To breathe life into the new facility, student focus groups provided feedback on features and amenities that will be provided, including a 24-hour study area, upgraded food services, a new recreation area, and larger, more enhanced meeting rooms. Designed by Mackey Mitchell with Ross Tarrant as the Architect-of-Record, this project will have major impact on student life. MMA’s project team includes John Burse, Jim Konrad, Clint Smith, Dan Schneider, Kyle Wagner, Stacey Wehe, and Merrilee Hertlein.
