Charger Union, the popular student center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville continues to receive accolades. At the April ACUI (Association of College Unions International) conference last week, the team accepted the project’s third award – an ACUI 2014 Facility Design Award of Excellence. The project has also garnered the IIDE Award from the International Interior Design Association, Alabama Chapter, and a 2014 Top Merit Award from the AIA, Birmingham Chapter. The university’s Dean of Students commented, “The presence of this building will transform the student life experience for many generations of UAH students.”
UAH’s Charger Union serves as a visible testament to the hard work, integrity and innovation of a forward-thinking client, motivated students, and a strong partnership between two firms – Mackey Mitchell Architects and TurnerBatson. As the lead design firm, Mackey Mitchell’s team included John Burse, Gwynn Zivic, Merrilee Hertlein and Jim Konrad. Architect of Record TurnerBatson team members included Richard Batson, James Collins and Kristin Corley.
