Originally opened in 1977, Sikes Residence Hall is in need of a major renovation. When it reopens in August 2024, it has a new look, transformed spaces, and a new name: Mabee Hall, in recognition of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation. The university's objective is clear: to address the lack of public community lounge space, improve vertical circulation, enhance security and access control, and ensure ADA accessibility. MMA is now transforming the existing space into a welcoming and inclusive environment for first-year students as part of the Freshman Village project, a comprehensive renovation and construction campaign for residence halls along East North 16th Street to better meet the living and learning needs of students.
Shape
In shaping the project, we leverage our Fire Starting process, aligning with ACU's vision for the first-year experience. Beginning with a program wish list, we collaborate closely with our construction partners to refine the project within budget constraints and to overcome challenges of post-COVID market fluctuations. Taming challenges such as limited space for the 7,000-sf addition and existing residential windows, we devise innovative solutions like creating an access corridor and expanding the building to accommodate the university's requirements. The renovation also includes adding common spaces on each floor, similar to Bullock and Wessel halls.

The completion of the Sikes Hall renovation project to Mabee Hall marks a significant milestone for Abilene Christian University. Beyond tangible outcomes like increased space and improved facilities, the project inspires a sense of community and belonging for students. As users step into the transformed space, they are greeted by an environment designed to foster connection and growth. Looking ahead, the future of the first-year residence halls at ACU appears promising, with equitable experiences awaiting incoming students.
The construction of the larger Bullock and Wessel halls in 2022 and 2023, followed by the reopening of Sikes, will allow us to further consolidate our first-year-student housing in new or recently renovated facilities as part of the Freshman Village project.
