Located at the eastern edge of campus between Johnson Family Hall and McCourtney Hall, Graham Hall 79,000 SF, 4-story residence will house 265 students. Graham Hall enjoys restful separation from the busy center of campus, but also acts as an entry portal between large parking lots and the inner campus. To grace this edge/portal experience, Mackey Mitchell designed a significant pedestrian archway bypassing the building’s first floor, adding poetic charm to both sides of the building, but also clarifying the difference between public and private residential zones.
Shape
Every residence hall on campus includes a chapel designed for two primary purposes—to allow weekly celebration of the Mass for the hall community, and to provide dedicated, 24-hour space for personal prayer and silent contemplation. The new Graham hall chapel sits adjacent to the pedestrian arch on the east side of the building, using its approachable one-story walls and low roof eaves to scale down the building’s four-story massing. The chapel interior features a wood-paneled vaulted ceiling in the shape of an extruded Gothic trefoil, which elongates perspective views toward the sanctuary, focusing graceful attention on the altar, crucifix, and tabernacle below.

“A Notre Dame education extends beyond the classroom, laboratory and studio to the experience of inclusive community in the residence halls. Rooted in the University’s Catholic mission, residential life endeavors to develop that sense of belonging and of responsibility that prepares students for leadership in their communities, our nation and the Church,” said University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. “With the addition of this new hall, we are able to ensure that generations of students will receive the best possible Notre Dame education.”
