The University of Oklahoma is transforming its first-year student housing by replacing 1960s and 70s residence hall towers with modern, efficient buildings. Led by Mackey Mitchell and ADG-Blatt, the project started with a master plan of five buildings surrounding a pedestrian axis extending from the main campus. Phase I, currently under construction, includes two buildings set to open in Fall 2025 and 2026. North Hall will house 559 students in 162,784 sf, and South Hall will accommodate 581 students in 175,498 sf. Each building features recreation areas, multipurpose rooms, and storm shelters, designed to offer a homelike atmosphere despite high capacity.
Shape
The design process for OU's new residence halls emphasized creating a home-like feel for students. Mackey Mitchell proposed distinct interior designs for each hall, providing unique qualities while maintaining a cohesive village-like exterior. The design team engaged with Residential Life staff, advisers, and students to incorporate their insights into the priorities and safety of the residents. This collaborative approach ensured that the designs met the needs of the students and staff, balancing aesthetic appeal with functionality. The final design addresses challenges with adjustments informed by ongoing feedback throughout the process.
Inspire
Though the new residence halls are still under construction, the project has already generated significant interest, with future students inquiring about the new housing. Located near the main campus, the new buildings enhance the architectural fabric with their Prairie Gothic style, creating a seamless extension of the campus's center. The design team has been inspired by the passionate input of alumni and university staff, who provided valuable insights and fostered a strong sense of community.
As we anticipate the future of OU Housing, we will be able to recapture the feeling of connectedness and community with the variety of options in our new student housing master plan.
